The name sake of Natural Science Productions comes from a Rush song, the most constant self inflicted artistic influence on my sense of being. Since I first heard the Motion Pictures album I have been addicted to Rush and obsessed with their musical and lyrical expression of the human condition even beyond Kubrick the imagery and content of Rush music is infused in my film and artwork as a primary influence on world view. When announced they were touring and commemorating the 30'th anniversary of Moving Pictures release I knew I had to see the show. Over the summer I met the drummer for Municipal Waste Dave Witte, he was the first person I had met that picked out the name of my production identity was a Rush homage. So we talked about this tour and it was decided we should not miss the Virginia show of the Time Machine tour.
I think this was my 9th Rush show at the venue I saw a few of the other concerts at different stages of my life 1997, 2002. I have seen Rush in Maryland, Virginia Beach, the last time I saw them was in 2007 at the Hollywood Bowl and was the last night I was in Los Angeles for At the River. There is a synergy to my exposures to Rush releases or tours that compliment my own development as an artist, at least in my own insane self mythology in my head.
Leave that Thing Alone: Released on Counterparts 1993 the first Rush album that I got on my own when it first dropped, the first Rush show I saw was on this tour that was sophomore year in high school. The first event I camped out for tickets. lots of memories of reading and drawing to this song. Always one of Geddy's bass highlights.
The drum solo. there are parts of this that are overwhelmingly transcendent of percussion. The lyrics of Neil Peart have had a profound impact on my writing, which is both good and bad and something I only recently realized.
La Villa Stangiato: Released on the album Hemispheres 1978. This song and album have always been important to me, when young I was exposed to a lot of classical music and when I got into rock music I connected to instrumentals because of that they were often longer compositions and with lots of complexities. This song includes one of Alex's solos that I would rewind often.
unfortunately my cell phone battery sucks I didn't get all the pieces of my favorite sections of what they played. And I didn't get some of the songs I came to see and hadn't heard live before to enjoy just being at a show.
Dave had brought for us some fine IPA's and food, tailgating with Erik and Scott of Tulsa Drone was good times pre and post concert. Going to a rock show with professional musicians was a very enlightening experience.
Dave Witte and a dude who only had Rush Tattoos. Im not there yet.
Too many thoughts and self reflection for a sunday. The Rush will wear off soon enough.

In August 2005 The Gasket did a covers show at Nanci Raygun. This is the show pretty much raw. I had this footage on my harddrive for years without much of an outlet to share in the days before uploading regularly online. In the back of my head I had hoped to share it for a gaskets reunion release. Now I cant be the only one to watch or hear this, I love The Gaskets music their creative success inspired me to want to do more with my own art. the music they made will always be in rotation. A new album of Ross's solo work under Ballpoint Pens is now online
Every Gaskets album and both Ballpoint Pens albums are available for download at htttp://www.thegaskets.com
but here are specific links to Ross's albums.
